Generally known as the Yuru Gompa, the Lamayuru Monastery is one of the hottest sights and Buddhist monasteries to see on Ladakh travels in India. Found in Kargil district in Western Ladakh in the Indian province of Jammu & Kashmir, Lamayuru Gompa is one of the earliest and biggest monasteries in Ladakh with facility to offer permanent dwelling over 450 monks. More than 150 monks are residing inside this prominent monastery of Lamayuru.

The Lamayuru Gompa consisted originally of five complexes, and some continues to be of the four corner structures can still be seen. Lamayuru is host to 2 annual masked dancing festivals. It is really popular for annual dance masked festival. The monastery is frequented by lots of domestic and international travelers each year.

Besides monastery, Lamayuru is also sought after among trekkers. It provides some superb trekking trails including Darcha to Lamayuru Trek, Lamayuru to Darcha Trek, Lamayuru to Alchi Trek, Alchi to Lamayuru Trek, Padum to Lamayuru Trek, etc. Adjacent Alchi Monastery and Wanla Monastery are also famous among tourists.
