Otherwise known as the Yuru Gompa, the Lamayuru Monastery is one of the most favored destinations and Buddhist monasteries to see on Ladakh journeys in India. Set in Kargil district in Western Ladakh in the Indian province of Jammu & Kashmir, Lamayuru Gompa is one of the earliest and biggest monasteries in Ladakh with volume to render permanent dwelling over 450 monks. More than 150 monks are staying inside this prominent monastery of Lamayuru.

The Lamayuru Gompa consisted originally of five establishments, and some continues to be of the four corner establishments can still be seen. Lamayuru is host to 2 annual masked dancing festivals. It is extremely widely known for annual dance masked festival. The monastery is frequented by several domestic and international vacationers each year.

Besides monastery, Lamayuru is also prominent among trekkers. It gives some fantastic trekking tracks including Darcha to Lamayuru Trek, Lamayuru to Darcha Trek, Lamayuru to Alchi Trek, Alchi to Lamayuru Trek, Padum to Lamayuru Trek, etc. Close by Alchi Monastery and Wanla Monastery are also renowned among tourists. Certainly, Lamayuru is a must see attraction of Ladakh excursions in India.
